American scientist invents new oil-absorbing gel

The German Chemical Society published a communiqué on the 18th that the United States has developed a new type of economical and environmentally friendly gelling agent that can effectively absorb oil stains on the surface of the Gulf of Mexico and is easy to collect and then refine.

The latest issue of the Journal of Applied Chemistry, a subsidiary of the German Chemical Society, reports on the results of researchers from the City University of New York and the University of Maryland. The newly developed gel agent is based on the natural extraction of sugar alcohols and fatty acids, and its three-dimensional fiber network molecular structure can absorb a large number of oil molecules to form a gel-like substance.

In the test, the researchers added a small amount of gelling agent to a mixture of water and different oils such as crude oil, diesel, and gasoline. The gelling agent and the oil immediately formed a gel and separated from the water. The jelly is very tightly bonded, and it will not "leak" even if it is flipped. It is suitable for collecting oil on the water surface.

After the new gel agent absorbs the oil, it can completely separate the oil and gel agent through simple vacuum distillation, so that both can be reused. This gel also has the characteristics of low cost, easy production, non-toxic and degradable.
