Scientists discover mechanism for clearing dead cells in the body

A component called C1q in the serum can quickly cover the dying cells. Although scientists have speculated that C1q may be involved in the cleanup of dying cells, the relevant mechanism has been unknown.

Terry Means et al found a receptor SCARF1 that exists in a large number of immune cells, it can recognize C1q bound to dying cells, causing immune cells to absorb and process these cells. Interfering with SCARF1 activity in mice will result in the accumulation of a large number of dead cells after destructive inflammation. The symptoms of human lupus disease are similar.

The researchers concluded that the dysfunction of this cleansing mechanism may therefore become the basis of various inflammatory diseases, and further research on this may help to develop new therapeutic intervention methods.
