3D printing "artificial heart" is comparable to landing on the moon?

Yesterday, China’s 3D printing network reported that “Scientists plan to develop a 3D printing technology heart within 10 years.” An ambitious 3D printing heart plan will create a natural replacement for patients within 10 years. But the researchers responsible for this "moon landing" action also believe that 3D printing technology must use biological self-organizing ability to complete this work.

The American Fun Science website reported on November 18th that the idea of using the patient's own adipose stem cells to make a 3D printed heart originated from Stewart Williams, director of administration and science at the Institute of Cardiovascular Research Innovation in Louisville, Kentucky. His lab has begun to develop a new generation of custom 3D printers that print out a complete heart that contains all the components - heart muscles, blood vessels, heart valves and electrical tissue. Williams said: "We can print out the various parts of the heart, but we are developing a new generation of printers that print the heart from the bottom up."

The report pointed out that this kind of heart is one of the most ambitious goals of researchers who are committed to creating 3D printed organs in the field of regenerative medicine. The 3D printing technology that creates human tissue by printing live cells in layers has enabled researchers to create small pieces of organs such as liver and kidney - usually using stem cells extracted from fat or bone marrow as a raw material.

Williams and the Institute of Cardiology Innovation have begun to use 3D printing technology to create what they call "biological" heart components. This method of staged production may eventually allow researchers to print and assemble a full-featured heart within a week. Williams said: "I said to my colleagues, 'Why don't we make it like building a big plane?' Divide this organ into separate parts, find the best way to make these parts, and then put them Together," the report said, creating an actual-sized organ requires researchers to print out human tissue, including a complex network of tiny blood vessels that ensures healthy organ function. Williams envisions 3D printing as an ideal method for making thinner blood vessels—he and his colleagues have used methods other than 3D printing to create the large vessels needed for transplant surgery.

The report pointed out that in the smallest scope, the bioengineering tasks that 3D printers can achieve are nothing more than that. The best printer may only print a few millimeters of structure, and the smallest blood vessels are a few microns in diameter, one millimeter is equivalent to 1000 microns.

According to reports, this is why 3D printing technology can only allow researchers to partially realize the goal of creating a complete heart. In addition, the researchers had to rely on the natural self-organization nature of the cells to connect the blood vessels and eventually combine each part of the 3D printed organ – this process can be completed within 24 hours. Williams said: "We will print something that is about tens of micrometers or nearly hundreds of micrometers, and then the cells will undergo their own biological developmental responses, which will enable the correct self-organization process."

Most researchers believe that the actual size of a 3D-printed organ may not become a reality in the next 10 or 15 years, but the Institute for Cardiology Innovation continues to steadily advance its goal of producing a 3D printed heart within 10 years. Williams expects that the new generation of "biometric printers" will start mass production in December.
